Being able to ride a motorcycle alone is an exciting experience. There is nothing like being out on the open road without having to depend on anyone. If you are planning on teaching a family member or friend how to ride a motorbike, you must take a lot of things into consideration. Here are some tips to follow while teaching.

Explaining the Basics

Before you get on the road, it is important to go through the basics. Get your student to sit on a motorcycle and learn about the vehicle. Go through every switch and explain what everything does on the bike. Let them get a feel for the motorcycle by gripping the accelerator, using the brakes and touching the clutch. You can also put them on the back as a pillion passenger, drive around slowly and show them how to use the motorcycle.

Lead the Way

If your student has purchased a bike from reputable Yamaha motorcycle dealers in Sydney and they’d like to take it for a spin, it is important that you lead the way. Ride in front of them to ensure they copy you as they go along.  Make sure you teach them all the essentials, such as:

• Cornering lines
• When to brake
• Where to look
• Using indicators

This demonstration should be done on more than one occasion, it is also sensible to record the ride, so you can identify any mistakes afterwards.

Mix it Up

Don’t always stay in front, let them take the lead, so you can see what mistakes they are making. You should also exaggerate when you lead, to emphasise what you are doing.

Stop at Regular Intervals

It is a good idea to regroup at regular stages throughout the drive. You can explain what you are trying to teach and ask the student if they’ve any questions.

Stay Positive

It doesn’t matter what you are teaching, the most important thing to remember is to stay positive. Always encourage your student and don’t dwell on things they’ve gotten wrong. Point out their mistakes and then move along with the lesson.

When teaching your family or friends to ride a motorcycle, you must be patient. It is important to go back to basics to allow them to learn at their own pace. Don’t rush the process and always stay positive when teaching. Getting frustrated or annoyed won’t help anyone, so take your time and take a break if needed.
